5,000 people married – without a wedding?

Nearly two and a half thousand couples got married in 2014 – usually without a wedding!

When same-sex marriage was introduced there was an option introduced for those couples who had registered a civil partnership to be able to ‘convert’ their partnership registration to marriage.

This month’s Office for National Statistics figures show that, following the introduction of the same-sex marriage law, some 2,411 same sex couples converted their civil partnership into a marriage between 10 December 2014 – when it first became an option as we reported at the time – and 31 December 2014.
