Miley Cyrus: Wrecking Binaries?
In an interview with Paper, star Miley Cyrus has come out as bisexual this week… or something very much like it. The Hannah Montana actress turned popstar moved on from 2013’s twerking headlines with the launch of her Happy Hippie foundation for LGBT and homeless young people earlier this year.
Miley talks about coming out to her mother aged 14 as loving girls in the same way as boys. She goes on to talk about sexuality and gender identity:
“I am literally open to every single thing that is consenting and doesn’t involve an animal and everyone is of age. Everything that’s legal, I’m down with. Yo, I’m down with any adult — anyone over the age of 18 who is down to love me,” she says. “I don’t relate to being boy or girl, and I don’t have to have my partner relate to boy or girl.”
While this is the kind of unlimited-by-gender language many bi people use about their attractions, the B word never gets used.
A month on from press reports of Cate Blanchett being bisexual readers may be a little more hesitant about the story. Those turned out to be based on selective, out-of-context quoting from an interview for Vanity Fair. However the quotes in Paper seem to be much more substantial.
