Election: Bi Hopes Dashed

Parliament

ParliamentAs the results came in from the 2015 General Election it became clear that hopes of a largest-ever bi representation in the Commons were to be dashed.

In 2010 only one out bi MP had been elected – Lib Dem Simon Hughes. During the course of the parliament Conservative Daniel Kawczynski came out. On Thursday both were defending their seats, while Louise Baldock was standing on the joint Co-Operative / Labour ticket in marginal seat Stockton South.

The final polls made it look like all three were likely to take their seats. However that wasn’t the way things panned out: the Conservatives held on in Stockton South while Labour took Southwark and Old Bermondsey.

So while the new parliament has more gay and lesbian MPs – and more women MPs – than ever before, we are down to just one out bisexual member in the Commons.
