Bi Media Watch – August 2014
Googly eyed and proud
Just a small Bi Media Watch this month as we marvel at what might be another little turning point in the mainstream media when it comes to bisexuality.
Over in the USA, True Blood star Anna Paquin was interviewed by Larry King. Anna’s loudly and proudly bi, making videos to help the cause of bi campaigns over there and more besides.
He asked if she used to be bisexual but now that’s all in the past as she’s married – the proverbial ‘picking a team’ nonsense, because three years ago she married a man.
“Well, I don’t think it’s a past-tense thing.” she said.
“Are you still straight if you are with somebody?… If you were to break up with them or if they were to die, it doesn’t prevent your sexuality from existing… It doesn’t really work like that.”
Cue cheering from the bi benches, but interestingly in the media coverage of the interview, Larry seems to be the one who has come off badly. As the internet kids used to say, he got pwned on live TV.
It’s not the end of biphobia in the media. But maybe it’s a sign that now, if we are strong and sure enough of ourselves, enough people in the press are starting to get it.
