Marriage Momentum

This originally appeared in BCN issue 114.

As reported last month there seems to be a race building between Scotland and the rest of Britain when it comes to same-sex marriage.  With two parallel consultations on how to implement same-sex marriage taking place North and South of the border, Scotland was the first to close its consultation; with Westminster in recess we’re guessing that nothing will come out for England and Wales til the autumn.

BCN’s reader poll a few months ago showed support for equal marriage going beyond the England & Wales proposals for non-religious civil ceremonies only.  Public statements from David Cameron and Nick Clegg in recent weeks suggest there may be a growing political will to go that bit further, though not at present to also open up civil partnerships to everyone at the same time.
